What Social Networking Can't Do

Stop Social Networking

I just came across a great article on what Social Networking won’t help you fix. The author is Chris Lake and the title of the post is What the f**k ISN’T social media?

Chris highlights 9 points and then gives a well thought out takeaway on each one. The categories are…

  • Social media isn’t going to help you sell shitty products
  • Social media isn’t going to revitalise your ailing company
  • Social media isn’t going to fix your crappy website (We can attest to this through implementing sites for our customers.)
  • Social media isn’t going to stop people from saying bad things about you (You should be monitoring what others are saying about you constantly through Google Alerts and other sources.)
  • Social media sites will inevitably extend the reach of your customer service channel
  • Social media isn’t going to turn a bad marketing strategy into a good one (To avoid this BIG problem, download our free marketing plan on the right side of this page.)
  • Social media isn’t about push: it’s about pull
  • Social media isn’t going to work for you if you aren’t a people person
  • Social media isn’t necessarily going to increase customer retention

There is a lot of really good advice for those who are actually trying to seriously market their business online, through both Social Media and other channels in Chris’ list. Do yourself many favors and see what he has to say.

That's what I was talkink about in my comment on eMarketing. Social Media is related with places on the net where people are nagging around, talking bla-bla, killing their boredom or just passing by. They'll never give a s**t on your marketing strategy or your product. It's like trying to sell swimming suits in hell. You may be tempted to believe it's a huge opportunity when you see the traffic ranking, but it's not quite so. The only noticeable way to bring consumers closest to you (talking about net of course) is on live streamming broadcasting and other stuff like that.
  • Dumitru,

What have you found that is actually successful? And can the results be measured?

dennis, did Dimitru ever reply back with WHAT WORKS??? I hear a lot of people bad mouthin Social, however I dont see anyone saying it works and there's a whole helluva a lot of money being spent, whether ill suited or not. and I find it VERY hard to beleive everyone is spending unwisely.
  • @Larry27 Dennis, isn't around at the moment but your comment should be addressed. The people I hear bad mouthing social marketing are ones that have not fully understood the principals that differentiate social marketing from marketing.

The guys over at Hub-Spot termed the phrase in-bound marketing which I think is a good representation of pull marketing practices. The costs associated with out-bound or push marketing practices all concur hard costs whether it be email blasting, advertising, etc. While in-bound marketing is for the small business owner is very cost effective requiring very little money up front, only requires some old fashioned work. Look as it as an investment rather than a hard cost.

OK -- so now, who do I speak to to explain more on In-bound marketing as this is likely a very new term/jargon and I'd like to know more about its core principles, practices and implementation.

Should I assume opt in type efforts are In-bound methods?
