HTML 5 will introduce new elements and attributes that will contain more semantic tags to describe the content or objects within them. For search engine optimization this means additional data can be added for embedded objects such as video or audio. With video as an integral element of blended search, this is exciting news for those interested in video search optimization.

Advantages of the new tag include:

• The new tag in HTML 5 provides greater compatibility with different video formats (sorry Flash but this may affect your popularity in the long term!).
• No longer do video publishers and video content providers like YouTube have to rely on users to have plugins installed in their browsers.
• Web developers can now build their own video player interfaces that correlate with the appearance of the rest of their site.
• Just like images currently, videos can be manipulated with JavaScript and CSS.
• Every piece of video (and audio for that matter) can be specifically tagged and have attributes, such as meta-data, title, alternative text, etc, built into the tag, making it far more visible to the search engines.
• This means that the playing field for video optimisation becomes even more open for us. It provides opportunities to broaden our horizon beyond the simple HTML elements and content on landing pages.
